Dos anos 30, o Bairro Lopes caracteriza-se por edifícios de 3 ou 4 pisos, com dois apartamentos por piso, escada central, fachadas contínuas e logradouros privativos de uso compartilhado. Por sua vez, estes quintais são divididos pelas frações e acessíveis apenas pela escada exterior, conectada às varandas. De áreas de cultivo a áreas de depósitos, muitos destes quintais estão hoje subutilizados e abandonados.
Da necessidade de intervir numa destas áreas, surgiu a oportunidade de repensar o seu uso, de modo a fortalecer a vocação coletiva deste espaço, respeitando a solicitação de independência entre as frações. Amarrados por peças inteiras de tijolos comuns de betão, definimos os perímetros das frações e o corredor de acesso e três cotas diferentes de assentamento. Cada núcleo funciona como um ilha cercada por área permeável, de forma a preservar a conexão entre as partes. A autonomia de cada fração é garantida pela liberdade de uso e definição do pavimento interno.
Até à sua execução, o projeto sofreu alterações que desafiaram a sua génese conceptual, expondo por um lado as fragilidades nas relações de vizinhança, no que respeita à identificação, uso e posse de um espaço, por outro, o potencial de transformação de um logradouro, enquanto espaço público de diálogo e troca, uma vez diluídas as barreiras entre as frações.

Built in the late 30s, the “Bairro Lopes” is characterized by three or four floor buildings, with two apartments per floor, central staircase, continuous facades and and private backyards for shared use. These yards are divided by fractions and accessible only by the outside staircase, connected to the balconies. From growing areas to deposit areas, many of these yards are now underused and abandoned.
From the need to intervene in one of these areas, there was an opportunity to rethink its use, in order to strengthen the collective vocation of this space, respecting the request for independence among fractions. Tied together by whole pieces of concrete bricks, we defined the perimeters of the fractions and the access corridor and three different dimensions of settlement. Each core functions as an island surrounded by permeable area, to preserve the connection between the parts. The autonomy of each fraction is guaranteed by the freedom of use and definition of the internal pavement.
Until its execution, the project underwent changes that challenged its conceptual genesis, exposing on one hand the fragilities in the neighborhood relations, concerning the identification, use and possession of a space, on the other, the potential of transforming a backyard, as a public space of dialogue and exchange once the barriers between fractions have been diluted.
